Anonymization by profession: the identifiers of 18 professions
An RG number designates a court case, an RPPS number a doctor, an INE number a student: every profession numbers its clients, patients and files with its own codes. For anonymization by profession, Biffer recognizes these identifiers for 18 professions, on top of common personal data (last names, first names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, French company numbers SIREN and SIRET, French social security numbers, IBANs, license plates, dates of birth, company names).
Anonymization by profession means treating these numbers like names: each one is detected from the label that introduces it ("N° RG", "RPPS", "Allocataire n°"), shown under a colored mask, then replaced by an alias of its type, RG_001 or RPPS_001. Processing happens entirely on your computer, on Mac as on PC. The identifiers are those used in France, where Biffer is published.
How anonymization by profession works
Biffer searches every document for all the profession fields it knows, whatever profession you chose: a notary who opens an employment contract sees the employee ID detected just as an HR department would. The profession selected in Settings puts its own fields at the top of the list, with their labels, and lets you turn each one on or off. Five fields are common to all profiles: file number, reference, contract number, employee ID and request number.
The detected document type complements the profession. Biffer classifies each file among 12 types and more than 70 subtypes, and adapts the redaction policy: a balance sheet keeps its amounts and financial year dates, a payslip has the employee's identity and ID redacted. Several universal fields are also searched in every case: place of birth, nationality, tax number, tax notice reference, online tax filer number.
If your work uses an internal identifier that is not on the list, you create a custom field: a label ("Sample") and the keyword that precedes the value in your files ("Sample no."). Biffer then detects it like the others, with an alias derived from the label. The full process is described on the page how Biffer works.
Law and justice: lawyer, notary, legal counsel, bailiff
Legal professions handle documents where the parties' identities appear on every page: submissions, summonses, notarial deeds, judgments, official reports. The subtypes Summons, Submissions, Judgment, Notarial deed and Formal notice are recognized automatically. Lawyers and notaries are bound by professional secrecy; redacting a document before analyzing it with an AI lets you use its reasoning without passing on clients' identities. The regulations page cites the applicable texts.
Lawyer
Bar locker number (toque), court case number (RG), prosecution, minute, docket, CARPA (client funds account), investigation, appeal, police report, complaint, prison register and matter numbers. Lawyer profile.
Notary
CRPCEN number (notary staff pension fund), deed number, land registry reference, register, formality, estate, loan and co-ownership numbers. Notary profile.
In-house legal counsel
Dispute numbers, INPI trademark and patent numbers, court case number (RG), police report or decision number, agreement or amendment number. Legal counsel profile.
Judicial officer (bailiff)
Deed, court case (RG), enforceable title, debt, official finding and minute numbers. Bailiff profile.
Accounting, banking and insurance: accountant, bank, insurer, administrator
In financial documents, amounts must stay readable and identifiers must disappear. Biffer recognizes the balance sheet and income statement, the corporate tax return package (liasse fiscale), the general ledger, the trial balance, the French accounting entries file (FEC), the bank statement, the loan offer, the amortization schedule, the insurance contract and the claim declaration. On a bank statement, the IBAN is validated by the modulo 97 check before being flagged; on a tax return package, SIREN and SIRET numbers are validated by the Luhn check digit.
Accountant
EU VAT number, account, invoice and tax return numbers, URSSAF (social contributions) number, OGA membership number, check and voucher numbers, SEPA mandate reference. Accountant profile.
Banking
Account, loan, customer, payment card and check numbers, transfer reference, SEPA mandate reference, BIC code. Banking profile.
Insurer and broker
Claim, policy, member, quote, premium receipt and appraisal numbers. Insurance profile.
Administrator
Customer, order, invoice, complaint, ticket, employee, member, claim and payslip numbers. Administrator profile.
Healthcare, social work, HR and training
These professions handle health data, social situations and individual histories, which the GDPR protects more strictly. Biffer recognizes the consultation report, the prescription, the medical letter, lab results, the social report, the benefit application file, the resume, the employment contract, the payslip, the annual review, the training agreement, the attendance sheet and the school report. A redacted applicant spreadsheet can be analyzed by an AI without the candidates being identifiable, as the page personal data and AI explains.
Doctor and health professional
RPPS and ADELI practitioner numbers, FINESS facility number, patient identifier (IPP), hospital stay, order, sick leave, prescription and health insurance member numbers. Healthcare profile.
Social worker
Benefit claimant, beneficiary and MDPH (disability office) numbers, measure, aid or application numbers, housing or placement numbers. Social worker profile.
Human resources
Employee, badge, payslip, URSSAF and health insurance numbers, residence permit and driving license numbers, France Travail (public employment service) identifier, application number. Human resources profile.

Teacher
INE national student number, pupil, student, Parcoursup and enrollment numbers, digital workspace (ENT) identifier. Teacher profile.
Local government, real estate, construction, sales and IT
These professions produce documents in which the identifier of a user, a lot or a machine is enough to find a person: council resolutions, mandates, inventories of fixtures, site meeting minutes, quotes, technical logs. Biffer recognizes, among others, the French administrative CERFA form, the residential or commercial lease, the inventory of fixtures, the co-ownership rules, the specifications, the acceptance report, the sales proposal, the support ticket and the event log.
Local government and public administration
Staff, application, benefit claimant, tax, council resolution, public contract, permit or authorization and service user numbers. Local government profile.

Frequently asked questions
Does the chosen profession limit what Biffer detects?
No. Biffer searches every document for all the profession fields it knows, as well as common personal data and universal fields (date and place of birth, nationality, tax number). The profession chosen in Settings puts its own fields first, with their labels, and lets you turn each one on or off. A law firm handling an employment tribunal case thus gets both the court case number (RG) and the bar locker number, specific to its profile, and the employee's ID or payslip number, from the human resources profile.
My profession is not on the list: what can I do?
Common detections work for every user: last names, first names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, French company numbers (SIREN and SIRET), French social security numbers, IBANs, license plates, dates of birth, company names, file and contract numbers. For an identifier specific to your work, you create a custom field by entering its label and the keyword that precedes it in your files: a laboratory adds "Sample no.", an association "Member no.". You can also select a value in the preview and choose "New field" to mask it with a dedicated alias. To suggest a new profile, write to contact@biffer.fr.
How does Biffer recognize an RG number or an RPPS number?
Each profession field is defined by the labels that introduce it in documents ("N° RG", "RG n°", "RPPS") and by the shape of the value that follows. Biffer spots the label, reads the value, then shows it under a colored mask in the preview, with the number of occurrences. For identifiers that carry a check digit, the calculation is verified before anything is flagged: the Luhn check for SIREN and SIRET, modulo 97 for the IBAN, the check key of the French social security number. You approve each detection before redacting, and you add by hand any value written without a label.
Are the profession profiles included in Biffer's price?
Yes. The 18 profession profiles, custom fields, document type detection and the encrypted mapping table are all part of the software. Biffer is free for 5 files per month, with no time limit, after a one-time email confirmation in the software. Beyond that, the unlimited license costs €10 excl. VAT (€12 incl. VAT) per computer, paid once on the purchase page: it is valid for life, updates included, and is activated in the software from Settings, on the License card. New profiles added by updates are included.
